What is a guardianship?
A guardianship is when a surrogate decision-maker is appointed to make personal and/or financial decisions for either a minor or an adult with mental or physical disabilities.
What is a ward?
If you are granted guardianship over someone they are considered award by the state.
What do I need to do to be granted guardianship?
In order to become a guardian over your loved one, you and our attorneys must first file a petition to determine incapacity where an examining committee will be appointed to determine if the ward has the ability to make decisions for themself. If the court determines that a guardian is necessary, there will be a hearing to determine who should be appointed guardian.
Is a guardian held responsible for their ward's bills and debts?
A guardian is responsible for handling their wards' finances and paying their bills on their behalf but only with the ward’s own financial means, not with their own personal funds.
